Dennis was dreaming about maths. The numbers and symbols were attacking him. He hadn’t done his homework. The questions were too difficult.
Dionigi stava sognando la matematica. I numeri e i simboli lo stavano attaccando. Non aveva fatto i compiti. Le domande matematiche erano troppo difficili.
Dennis woke up. “My teacher will be mad at me, tomorrow,” he thought.
Dionigi si è svegliato. “La mia insegnante sarà arrabbiata con me, domani,” ha pensato.
Then he heard a strange sound. It was like a pencil writing on paper. At first, he thought it was a ghost, and he was scared. Then he thought, “I’m still dreaming.” He fell asleep again.
Poi ha sentito un suono strano. Era come una matita che scriveva su un foglio. All’inizio, ha pensato che fosse un fantasma, ed era spaventato. Poi ha pensato: “Sto ancora sognando.” Si addormentò di nuovo.
In the morning, Dennis found a piece of paper on his desk. There were lots of numbers on the paper. They were the answers to his maths homework! He quickly copied the answers into his book. Then he went to school.
La mattina, Dionigi ha trovato un foglio di carta sulla sua scrivania. C’erano un sacco di numeri sulla carta. Erano le risposte ai suoi compiti di matematica! Ha copiato in fretta le risposte sul suo quaderno. Poi è andato a scuola.
That evening, Dennis had more homework. He didn’t know how to solve the equations. But maybe he didn’t need to. He left the homework on his desk. In the morning, he found a note with all the answers.
Quella sera, Dionigi aveva altri compiti da fare. Non sapeva come risolvere le equazioni. Ma forse non ne aveva bisogno. Ha lasciato i compiti sulla sua scrivania. La mattina, ha trovato un biglietto con tutte le risposte.
“It’s a helpful ghost!” Dennis thought. “I don’t mind ghosts if they do my homework!”
“È un fantasma d’aiuto!” ha pensato Dionigi. “I fantasmi non mi danno fastidio se fanno i miei compiti!”
Once again, he copied the answers quickly, then went to school.
Ancora una volta, ha copiato le risposte in fretta, poi è andato a scuola.
A few weeks passed, and Dennis’s teachers were impressed. He had become an excellent maths student. All of his answers were correct. He solved all the equations. Dennis started to feel proud. He liked maths now.
Sono passate alcune settimane in questo modo e gli insegnanti di Dionigi sono rimasti colpiti da lui. Era diventato un eccellente studente di matematica. Tutte le sue risposte erano corrette. Risolveva tutte le equazioni. Dionigi ha iniziato a sentirsi orgoglioso. Ora gli piaceva la matematica.
One day, the teacher called Dennis to her desk.
Un giorno, l’insegnante ha chiamato Dionigi alla sua scrivania.
“I know,” she said.
“Lo so,” ha detto.
How did she find out about the ghost? Dennis had to tell the truth. “I didn’t ask the ghost to do it. But it was so helpful…”
Come aveva scoperto del fantasma? Dionigi doveva dire la verità. “Non ho chiesto al fantasma di farlo. Ma è stato così d’aiuto…”
“Ghost?” said the teacher. “Don’t lie, Dennis. I know your older sister is giving you the answers.”
“Fantasma?” ha detto l’insegnante. “Non mentire, Dionigi. So che tua sorella maggiore ti sta dando le risposte.”
“My sister?” said Dennis. “She isn’t helping me! It’s—”
“Mia sorella?” ha detto Dionigi. “Non mi sta aiutando! È—”
“Read this question, Dennis!” shouted the teacher. She was angry.
“Leggi questa domanda, Dionigi!” ha urlato l’insegnante. Era arrabbiata.
“Two X minus four equals zero. What is X?” said Dennis.
“Due X meno quattro è uguale a zero. Qual è X?” ha detto Dionigi.
“Now read your answer,” said the teacher.
“Ora leggi la tua risposta,” ha detto l’insegnante.
Dennis read what he had written: “X equals four divided by two. Therefore X equals two, love from Susan.”
Dionigi ha letto ciò che aveva scritto: “X è uguale a quattro diviso per due. Quindi X è uguale a due, con affetto da Susanna.”
