La plupart des gens disent qu’ils ne croient pas aux fantômes. Jusqu’à ce qu’ils en voient ou en entendent un, eux-mêmes. C’est à ce moment-là qu’ils appellent un chasseur de fantômes. C’est à ce moment-là que le téléphone de Chrétien sonne.
Most people say they don’t believe in ghosts. Until they see or hear one, themselves. That’s when they call a ghost hunter. That’s when Christian’s phone rings.
Il y avait une petite ville dans une partie oubliée du pays, où un vieux théâtre tombait lentement en ruines. Il n’y avait pas eu de représentation depuis cinquante ans ou plus. Personne vivant n’y était jamais entré. Les gens le remarquaient à peine – jusqu’à ce que les chants commencent.
There was a little town in a forgotten part of the country, where an old theatre was slowly falling apart. There hadn’t been a performance in fifty years or more. No one living had ever been inside. People barely noticed it – until the singing started.
Chaque nuit, à minuit, une voix obsédante résonnait depuis le fond du théâtre. Au début, les gens l’ignoraient. Juste des enfants qui jouaient, pensaient-ils. Mais la voix était trop puissante, trop ancienne, trop triste. Quelques personnes sont entrées pour dire au chanteur de se taire. La scène était vide.
Every night, at midnight, a haunting voice echoed from deep inside the theatre. At first, people ignored it. Just kids playing games, they thought. But the voice was too powerful, too old, too sad. A few people went inside to tell the singer to be quiet. The stage was empty.
Dans ses recherches, Chrétien avait appris que le théâtre avait été initialement construit par Adélaïde la Magnifique, l’une des chanteuses les plus célèbres de son époque. Elle avait grandi dans la ville, avant de partir et de devenir célèbre à l’étranger.
In his research, Christian had learned that the theatre was originally built by Adelaide the Magnificent, one of the most famous singers of her day. She had grown up in the town, before leaving and becoming famous overseas.
Plus tard, elle est revenue dans la ville, a construit le théâtre et a joué dans presque tous ses spectacles pendant vingt ans. Later on, she returned to the town, built the theatre and performed in nearly all its shows for twenty years. The town’s mayor had given her an Award of Honour on her sixtieth birthday, to recognise the years of entertainment she had provided to local people.
Chrétien a regardé sa montre. Il était presque minuit. Il était assis dans le noir, à l’intérieur du théâtre, sur l’un des sièges du balcon. Il restait absolument immobile et silencieux, regardant la scène. Puis l’horloge de la ville a égréné douze coups.
Christian checked his watch. It was nearly midnight. He was sitting in the dark, inside the theatre, on one of the balcony seats. He stayed absolutely still and silent, watching the stage. Then the town’s clock chimed twelve times.
Une lumière fantomatique a rempli la scène, et le fantôme d’Adélaïde la Magnifique est apparu. Sa peau était pâle comme un os, et sa belle robe était déchirée et sale. Pourtant, elle était belle.
A ghostly light filled the stage, and the ghost of Adelaide the Magnificent appeared. Her skin was as pale as bone, and her fine dress was torn and dirty. Yet, she looked beautiful.
Puis elle a commencé à chanter. C’était le son le plus triste que Chrétien avait jamais entendu. Sa voix tremblait d’émotion alors qu’elle glissait lentement sur la scène. Lorsqu’elle a chanté la dernière note, Chrétien était en larmes.
Then she began to sing. It was the saddest sound Christian had ever heard. Her voice trembled with emotion as she glided slowly across the stage. By the time she sang the final note, Christian was in tears.
Il a sauté de son siège et a applaudi fort. “Magnifique !” a-t-il crié.
He jumped from his seat and clapped loudly. “Magnificent!” he cried.
Le fantôme l’a vu. Elle avait l’air surprise. Puis elle s’est inclinée profondément. Elle ne s’est pas relevée. Elle a simplement disparu.
The ghost saw him. She looked surprised. Then she bowed deeply. She didn’t rise back up. She just disappeared.
Après le départ de Chrétien de la ville, il a fait d’autres recherches. Il y a des décennies, tout le monde en ville se rassemblait chaque soir pour profiter de la dernière représentation du théâtre. Ils chantaient, riaient et pleuraient ensemble. Cela avait été le cœur et l’âme de la ville.
After Christian left the town, he did some more research. Decades ago, everyone in town had gathered every night to enjoy the theatre’s latest performance. They sang, laughed and cried together. It had been the heart and soul of the town.
Le fantôme d’Adélaïde n’est plus jamais apparu. Le temps avait avancé, et elle reposait en paix. Mais pendant une dernière nuit, elle avait chanté pour un public, touché son cœur, et s’était inclinée devant ses applaudissements.
Adelaide’s ghost never appeared again. Time had moved on, and she rested in peace. But for one final night, she had sung to an audience, touched his heart, and bowed to his applause.
