The private detective sat at his desk. No one had hired him for a long time. When a woman entered the office, he almost fell off his chair.
L’investigatore privato sedeva alla sua scrivania. Nessuno lo aveva assunto da molto tempo. Quando una donna è entrata nell’ufficio, è quasi caduto dalla sedia.
“Excuse me, are you the detective?” she asked.
“Mi scusi, lei è l’investigatore?” ha chiesto lei.
“That’s correct. How can I assist you, madam?”
“Esatto. Come posso aiutarla, signora?”
“I want you to follow a suspicious individual,” she said.
“Voglio che lei segua un individuo sospetto,” ha detto lei.
“This sounds interesting,” said the detective. “Tell me more.”
“Questo sembra interessante,” ha detto l’investigatore. “Raccontami di più.”
He was excited. It was the big case he’d been waiting for.
Era eccitato. Era il grande caso che stava aspettando.
“He has a round face, a big nose, and small ears. He is always going into other people’s gardens and sometimes into their houses.”
“Ha un viso rotondo, un grosso naso, e piccole orecchie. Entra sempre nei giardini degli altri e talvolta nelle loro case.”
“That is terrible,” said the detective. “What else?”
“È terribile,” ha detto l’investigatore. “Cosa altro?”
“He is often watching me, or following me around. I think he is spying on me.”
“Spesso mi guarda, o mi segue in giro. Penso che mi stia spiando.”
“What secrets are you keeping?” the detective asked.
“Quali segreti nasconde?” ha chiesto l’investigatore.
“I’m not telling you that!” the woman said angrily.
“Non le dirò quello!” ha detto la donna arrabbiata.
“What I mean is: why is someone spying on you?” the detective said calmly.
“Ciò che intendo è: perché qualcuno la sta spiando?” ha detto l’investigatore con calma.
“You’re the detective. You should tell me. But I do have an idea.”
“Lei è l’investigatore. Lei dovrebbe dirmelo. Ma ho un’idea.”
“Yes?”
“Sì?”
“He never speaks, and he walks on his hands and his feet. It’s very strange. I think he could be an alien.”
“Non parla mai, e cammina sulle mani e sui piedi. È molto strano. Penso che potrebbe essere un alieno.”
The detective realised this wasn’t the big case he’d been waiting for.
L’investigatore ha capito che questo non era il grande caso che stava aspettando.
“Where can I find this alien?” he said.
“Dove posso trovare questo alieno?” ha detto.
“In my house,” said the woman. “He’s my cat.”
“Nella mia casa,” ha detto la donna. “È il mio gatto.”
“I see,” the detective said. He opened the door for her.
“Capisco,” ha detto l’investigatore. Le ha aperto la porta.
But the woman had written a number on a piece of paper. “This is how much I will pay you for the investigation,” she said.
Ma la donna ha scritto un numero su un pezzo di carta. “Questo è quanto le pagherò per l’indagine,” ha detto lei.
The detective slammed the door.
L’investigatore ha sbattuto la porta.
“When would you like me to start?” he asked.
