Non c’erano altre auto sulla strada quella notte. Adriano stava guidando verso casa attraverso una grande foresta, sentendosi triste e solo. Tra gli alberi era completamente buio.
There were no other cars on the road that night. Adrian was driving home through a large forest, feeling sad and lonely. Between the trees it was completely dark.
Ha acceso la radio, ma non c’era nessun segnale. Allora ha iniziato a cantare una vecchia canzone della sua gioventù. Ha cantato l’ultima strofa a squarciagola: “Il mio cuore sarà – sempre – con – te!”
He turned on the radio, but there wasn’t any signal. So he started to sing an old song from his youth. He sang the final line at the top of his voice: “My heart will – always – be – with you!”
Quando ha finito, il silenzio sembrava il suono più forte di tutti.
When he finished, the silence seemed the loudest sound of all.
Adriano ha fermato la macchina all’improvviso. Un’auto si è schiantata contro un albero sul lato della strada. Adriano è sceso.
Adrian stopped the car suddenly. A car had crashed into a tree on the side of the road. Adrian got out.
“Stai bene?” ha gridato.
“Are you alright?” he shouted.
Ha guardato dentro l’auto. Era vuota. La porta del conducente era aperta.
He looked inside the car. It was empty. The driver’s door was open.
Adriano ha chiamato i soccorsi.
Adrian called the emergency services.
“Pronto, qual è l’emergenza?”
“Hello, what is the emergency?”
“Qualcuno si è schiantato sul lato della strada. Hanno lasciato la loro auto e non so dove siano.” Ha dato la sua posizione.
“Someone has crashed on the side of the road. They’ve left their car and I don’t know where they are.” He gave his location.
“Grazie signore. Conosciamo quella strada. Ci sono molti incidenti lì. Arriveremo presto. Stava guidando da solo, signore?”
“Thank you sir. We know that road. A lot of crashes happen there. We’ll be there soon. Were you driving alone, sir?”
“Sì, io – stavo solo tornando a casa.”
“Yes, I – I was just driving home.”
“E dove abita, signore? Ho bisogno delle informazioni per compilare un rapporto completo.”
“And where is your home, sir? I need the information to file a complete report.”
Dopo che Adriano ha dato il suo indirizzo, c’è stata una lunga pausa.
After Adrian gave his address, there was a long pause.
“Quell’indirizzo non corrisponde a nessuno dei miei archivi, signore.”
“That address doesn’t match any of my records, sir.”
“Cosa?—Ah, forse avete il mio vecchio indirizzo.” Lo ha dato.
“What?—Oh, maybe you have my old address.” He gave it.
“È una bella città, signore. È da lì che veniva questa sera?”
“That’s a nice town, sir. Is that where you were driving from this evening?”
“Sì – stavo visitando i miei genitori. Quello è l’indirizzo dei miei genitori. È importante?”
“Yes – I was visiting my parents. That’s my parents’ address. Is this important?”
“Ha detto che stava guidando a casa, signore. Ma non è vero, vero?”
“You said you were driving home, sir. But that’s not true, is it?”
“Cosa vuol dire?”
“What do you mean?”
“Stava guidando verso il luogo dove vive, in città. Ma la città non è la sua casa, vero? Non ci è cresciuto. Non ha imparato a andare in bicicletta lì, o a giocare nei campi con i suoi genitori, o a cantare con i suoi amici. La verità è, che tu stava allontanandosi dalla sua casa.”
“You were driving to the place where you live, in the city. But the city isn’t your home, is it? You didn’t grow up there. You didn’t learn to ride your bike there, or play in the fields with your parents, or sing with your friends. The truth is, you were driving away from your home.”
“Cos’è questo?” ha gridato Adriano, sentendosi spaventato. “Chi sei? È questo il servizio di emergenza?”
“What is this?” shouted Adrian, feeling frightened. “Who are you? Is this the emergency services?”
L’altra persona ha chiuso la chiamata.
The other person ended the call.
Adriano era terrorizzato. Cosa stava succedendo? Ha guardato tutto intorno. Qualcuno lo stava osservando? Ma era ancora solo nel buio.
Adrian was terrified. What was going on? He looked all around. Was someone watching him? But he was still alone in the dark.
Poi, Adriano ha sentito un suono che lo ha fatto gelare.
Then, Adrian heard a sound that made him freeze.
“— cuore sarà sempre con — cuore sarà sempre con —”
“— heart will always be — heart will always be —”
Era la radio rotta nell’auto schiantata. Adriano si è girato velocemente. Ha guardato di nuovo l’auto. Ora poteva vedere il conducente, nello specchietto dell’auto. L’uomo era morto sul suo sedile.
It was the broken radio in the crashed car. Adrian turned quickly. He looked at the car again. He could see the driver now, in the car’s mirror. The man was dead in his seat.
Adriano ha guardato l’uomo per molto tempo. Poi ha fissato la strada, verso la città. Infine, si è girato, ed ha iniziato a camminare verso casa.
Adrian looked at the man for a long time. Then he stared along the road, towards the city. Finally, he turned around, and began to walk home.
