Arnauld, un jardinier passionné mais maladroit, avait enfin réussi à faire pousser une citrouille géante et parfaite. Il était sûr de remporter un gros prix à la foire locale et il avait hâte de la montrer.
Arnold, an impassioned but clumsy gardener, had finally succeeded in growing a flawless, giant pumpkin. He was sure to win a big prize at the local fair, and he couldn’t wait to show it off.
Cependant, la veille de la foire, il a découvert que sa citrouille avait disparu. Il y avait de nettes traces orange qui formaient un chemin du portillon de son jardin à la clôture de son voisin.
However, on the eve of the fair, he found that his pumpkin had disappeared. There were distinct orange smudges marking a trail from his garden gate to his neighbour’s fence.
Arnauld a confronté son voisin. « Avez-vous pris ma citrouille ? » a-t-il demandé.
Arnold confronted his neighbour. “Did you take my pumpkin?” he asked.
« Je ne me serais pas donné la peine de prendre un légume aussi pathétique », a rétorqué sèchement son voisin.
“I wouldn’t bother taking such a pathetic vegetable,” his neighbour snapped.
« C’était une citrouille très respectable », a insisté Arnauld. « Et quelqu’un l’a prise. J’imagine qu’ils ont pensé qu’ils ne pourraient gagner que s’ils sabotaient ma candidature. »
“It was a very respectable pumpkin,” Arnold insisted. “And someone has taken it. I suspect that they felt they would only be able to win if they sabotaged my entry.”
« C’est une accusation scandaleuse », a dit le voisin. « Vous avez toujours été un jardinier incompétent. Votre citrouille n’aurait pas remporté de prix, même s’ils décernaient des prix pour les pires légumes de la terre. »
“That’s an outrageous accusation,” said the neighbour. “You have always been a useless gardener. Your pumpkin wouldn’t have won a prize, even if they awarded prizes for the worst vegetables on earth.”
Arnauld était blessé et il est rentré chez lui en furie.
Arnold was hurt and he stormed back into his house.
Le lendemain, Arnauld s’est rendu à la foire même s’il n’avait rien à montrer. Il se tenait seul derrière sa table vide, et avait l’air ridicule comparé à tous les autres concurrents, dont les tables débordaient de produits. Son voisin se tenait là, souriant et exhibant son énorme aubergine.
The following day, Arnold attended the fair even though he had nothing to show. He stood alone behind his empty table, and looked foolish compared to all the other entrants, whose tables were brimming with produce. His neighbour stood smiling, with his enormous aubergine on display.
Comme prévu, le voisin a remporté le premier prix, et il s’est approché d’Arnauld pour se vanter. « Je suppose que c’est le meilleur qui a gagné, hein Arnauld ? » a-t-il dit avec un sourire narquois.
Sure enough, the neighbour won first prize, and he approached Arnold to gloat. “I guess the best man won, eh Arnold?” he said with a smirk.
Tout à coup, il y a eu de l’agitation à l’entrée de la tente. La citrouille d’Arnauld a roulé à l’intérieur, comme si elle était vivante. Ensuite, le chien d’Arnauld l’a suivie. Il avait poussé et fait rouler la citrouille à travers toute la ville. Le vrai voleur avait été démasqué.
Suddenly, there was a commotion at the tent’s entrance. Arnold’s pumpkin rolled in, as if it had a life of its own. Then Arnold’s dog came after it. It had been pushing and rolling the pumpkin all around town. The true thief had been revealed.
Les juges étaient stupéfaits. « Regardez la taille de cette citrouille ! » se sont-ils exclamés. Le voisin avait l’air très inquiet.
The judges were flabbergasted. “Look at the size of that pumpkin!” they exclaimed. The neighbour looked very worried.
Le juge principal s’est approché d’Arnauld. « Comme nous avons déjà décerné le premier prix, nous ne pouvons pas le reprendre », a-t-il dit. « Mais si votre citrouille était arrivée à temps, elle aurait sûrement gagné. »
The senior judge approached Arnold. “As we have already awarded the first prize, we can’t take it away,” he said. “But if your pumpkin had arrived in time, it surely would have won.”
Le voisin avait l’air satisfait, et a brandi son trophée devant Arnauld.
The neighbour looked satisfied, and waved his trophy at Arnold.
« Cependant, au vu de ces événements, je pense que nous devrions décerner un prix spécial. Arnauld, vous recevrez le prix d’Entrée la plus insolite ! Je pense que personne ne pourra vous le retirer. »
“However, in light of these events, I feel we should award a special prize. Arnold, you shall be given the award for the Most Unusual Method of Entry! I doubt anyone will ever take it away from you.”
Au cours des années suivantes, le voisin d’Arnauld montrait régulièrement à ses amis le trophée de premier prix sur son étagère, et ses amis s’ennuyaient. « Mais, as-tu vu le prix qu’Arnauld a, cependant ? » disaient-ils. « Il est complètement unique. Il est entré dans l’histoire ! »
In years to come, Arnold’s neighbour would regularly show his friends his first prize trophy on his shelf, and his friends would yawn. “Did you see the prize Arnold has, though?” they would say. “It’s completely unique. It went down in history!”
