“C’est certainement une langue extraterrestre,” a confirmé Alison.
“It’s definitely an alien language,” Alison confirmed.
Le Général a hoché la tête en silence. Alison était debout dans une base militaire secrète. Il y avait des équipements informatiques partout. Deux soldats avec des armes étaient postés près de la porte.
The General nodded silently. Alison was standing inside a secret military base. There was computer equipment everywhere. There were two soldiers with guns standing by the door.

Alison was an expert linguist. As soon as the satellites had received the strange signal, the military had brought her to the base.

“This is a matter of extreme importance to the whole planet,” said the General. “It’s the President’s top priority. Name anyone you need, and I’ll get them on your team. We need to understand what that message says.”
Alison lui a donné une liste de chercheurs avec qui elle avait travaillé dans le passé. Le Général est parti. Les soldats ont salué.
Alison gave him a list of researchers she’d worked with in the past. The General left. The soldiers saluted.
Alison et son équipe ont travaillé jour et nuit pour décoder le message extraterrestre. Au début, les progrès étaient lents. Ensuite, ils ont commencé à faire des avancées. Alison and her team worked day and night to decode the alien message. At first, progress was slow. Then, they began to make breakthroughs. They learned to understand the alien language’s unusual grammar. One by one, the words began to make sense.

A few weeks later, Alison reported to the General.
“Nous avons terminé la traduction,” a dit Alison timidement, regardant ses pieds. “Ça dit —”
“We’ve finished the translation,” said Alison timidly, looking at her feet. “It says —”
“Arrêtez-vous là,” a interrompu le Général. “Vous devriez le dire à la Présidente, pas à moi.”
“Stop right there,” the General interrupted. “You should tell the President, not me.”
Le jour suivant, la Présidente est arrivée avec une armée de conseillers, ministres et journalistes. Elle a serré la main de tout le monde, puis elle s’est assise derrière une grande table.
The next day, the President arrived with an army of advisors, ministers and journalists. She shook hands with everyone, then she sat down behind a large table.
“C’est à vous,” a dit le Général. Il a poussé Alison en avant.
“That’s your cue,” said the General. He pushed Alison forward.
Alison s’est assise face à la Présidente. Les caméras ont flashé.
Alison sat down opposite the President. The cameras flashed.
“Alison, le monde entier vous remercie, vous et votre équipe, pour votre travail assidu pour déterminer la signification de ce signal extraterrestre,” a dit la Présidente.
“Alison, the whole world thanks you and your team for your diligent work to determine the meaning of this alien signal,” said the President.
“Merci,” a chuchoté Alison dans le microphone.
“Thank you,” Alison whispered into the microphone.
“Dites-nous directement : est-ce un message de guerre ?”
“Tell us straight away: is it a message of war?”
“Non,” a dit Alison, sans lever les yeux.
“No,” said Alison, without looking up.
Les journalistes ont acclamé et applaudi. “Alors c’est un message de paix !” a-t-elle dit, en souriant.
The journalists cheered and clapped. “Then it is a message of peace!” she said, smiling.
“Non,” a dit Alison.
“No,” said Alison.
Les applaudissements ont cessé. Les journalistes ont commencé à murmurer.
The applause died down. The journalists began to murmur.
“Eh bien, qu’est-ce que ça dit ?” a dit la Présidente enfin.
“Well, what does it say?” said the President at last.
Alison a dégluté, et a pris une grande respiration.
Alison gulped, and took a deep breath.
“Les services locaux ne collecteront pas les poubelles qui sont trop pleines.”
“The local services will not collect rubbish bins that are too full.”
