Il n’y avait pas d’autres voitures sur la route cette nuit-là. Adrien rentrait chez lui à travers une grande forêt, se sentant triste et seul. Entre les arbres, il faisait complètement noir.
There were no other cars on the road that night. Adrian was driving home through a large forest, feeling sad and lonely. Between the trees it was completely dark.
Il a allumé la radio, mais il n’y avait pas de signal. Alors il a commencé à chanter une vieille chanson de sa jeunesse. Il a chanté la dernière ligne à tue-tête : “Mon cœur sera – toujours – avec – toi !”
He turned on the radio, but there wasn’t any signal. So he started to sing an old song from his youth. He sang the final line at the top of his voice: “My heart will – always – be – with you!”
Quand il a fini, le silence lui a semblé être le son le plus fort de tous.
When he finished, the silence seemed the loudest sound of all.
Adrien a arrêté la voiture brusquement. Une voiture avait percuté un arbre sur le côté de la route. Adrien est sorti.
Adrian stopped the car suddenly. A car had crashed into a tree on the side of the road. Adrian got out.
“Ça va ?” a-t-il crié.
“Are you alright?” he shouted.
Il a regardé à l’intérieur de la voiture. Elle était vide. La portière du conducteur était ouverte.
He looked inside the car. It was empty. The driver’s door was open.
Adrien a appelé les secours.
Adrian called the emergency services.
“Allo, quelle est l’urgence ?”
“Hello, what is the emergency?”
“Quelqu’un a eu un accident sur le côté de la route. Il a quitté sa voiture et je ne sais pas où il est.” Il a donné sa position.
“Someone has crashed on the side of the road. They’ve left their car and I don’t know where they are.” He gave his location.
“Merci monsieur. Nous connaissons cette route. Beaucoup d’accidents s’y produisent. Nous serons là bientôt. Vous rouliez seul, monsieur ?”
“Thank you sir. We know that road. A lot of crashes happen there. We’ll be there soon. Were you driving alone, sir?”
“Oui, je – je rentrais simplement chez moi.”
“Yes, I – I was just driving home.”
“Et où est votre domicile, monsieur ? J’ai besoin de cette information pour compléter le rapport.”
“And where is your home, sir? I need the information to file a complete report.”
Après qu’Adrien a donné son adresse, il y a eu un long silence.
After Adrian gave his address, there was a long pause.
“Cette adresse ne correspond à aucun de mes enregistrements, monsieur.”
“That address doesn’t match any of my records, sir.”
“Quoi ?—Oh, peut-être vous avez ma vieille adresse.” Il la donne.
“What?—Oh, maybe you have my old address.” He gave it.
“C’est une jolie ville, monsieur. C’est de là que vous veniez ce soir ?”
“That’s a nice town, sir. Is that where you were driving from this evening?”
“Oui – je rendais visite à mes parents. C’est l’adresse de mes parents. Est-ce important ?”
“Yes – I was visiting my parents. That’s my parents’ address. Is this important?”
“Vous avez dit que vous rentriez chez vous, monsieur. Mais ce n’est pas vrai, n’est-ce pas ?”
“You said you were driving home, sir. But that’s not true, is it?”
“Que voulez-vous dire ?”
“What do you mean?”
“Vous alliez à l’endroit où vous vivez, en métropole. Mais la métropole n’est pas vraiment chez vous, n’est-ce pas ? Vous n’y avez pas grandi. Vous n’y avez pas appris à faire du vélo, ni joué dans les champs avec vos parents, ni chanté avec vos amis. En réalité, vous vous éloigniez de chez vous.”
“You were driving to the place where you live, in the city. But the city isn’t your home, is it? You didn’t grow up there. You didn’t learn to ride your bike there, or play in the fields with your parents, or sing with your friends. The truth is, you were driving away from your home.”
“C’est quoi ça ?” a crié Adrien, ressentant de la peur. “Qui êtes-vous ? Est-ce les secours ?”
“What is this?” shouted Adrian, feeling frightened. “Who are you? Is this the emergency services?”
L’autre personne a mis fin à l’appel.
The other person ended the call.
Adrien était terrifié. Qu’est-ce qui se passait ? Il a regardé tout autour de lui. Quelqu’un l’observait-il ? Mais il était toujours seul dans l’obscurité.
Adrian was terrified. What was going on? He looked all around. Was someone watching him? But he was still alone in the dark.
Puis, Adrien a entendu un son qui l’a fait geler sur place.
Then, Adrian heard a sound that made him freeze.
“— cœur sera toujours avec — cœur sera toujours avec —”
“— heart will always be — heart will always be —”
C’était la radio cassée de la voiture accidentée. Adrien s’est retourné rapidement. Il a regardé la voiture de nouveau. Il pouvait voir le conducteur maintenant, dans le rétroviseur de la voiture. L’homme était mort sur son siège.
It was the broken radio in the crashed car. Adrian turned quickly. He looked at the car again. He could see the driver now, in the car’s mirror. The man was dead in his seat.
Adrien a regardé l’homme pendant longtemps. Puis il a fixé la route, en direction de la métropole. Enfin, il s’est retourné, et a commencé à rentrer chez lui.
Adrian looked at the man for a long time. Then he stared along the road, towards the city. Finally, he turned around, and began to walk home.
