Monsieur Thierry vivait seul dans une ville tranquille. Il était un espion à la retraite, donc il gardait un œil sur le quartier. Il cherchait toujours quelque chose de suspect.
Mister Thomas lived alone in a quiet town. He was a retired spy, so he kept watch over the neighbourhood. He was always looking for anything suspicious.
Un jour, de nouveaux voisins ont emménagé à côté. Monsieur Thierry les a observés attentivement. Au début, ils semblaient être un couple normal. Mais bientôt, il les a vus faire quelque chose d’étrange.
One day, new neighbours moved in next door. Mister Thomas watched them carefully. At first, they seemed like a normal couple. But soon, he saw them doing something strange.
Chaque soir, ils allaient dans leur jardin. Ils jardinaient. Encore plus étrange, ils chuchotaient en même temps.
Every evening, they went into their garden. They were gardening. Even stranger, they were whispering at the same time.
“C’est suspect,” pensait Monsieur Thierry, en les regardant de sa fenêtre. “De quoi parlent-ils en chuchotant ? Ils cachent quelque chose.”
“That’s suspicious,” Mister Thomas thought, watching them from his window. “What are they whispering about? They’re hiding something.”
Monsieur Thierry a décidé d’enquêter. Cette nuit-là, il est allé dans leur jardin. Mais il a renversé une bêche, et cela a fait un grand bruit.
Mister Thomas decided to investigate. That night, he went into their garden. But he knocked over a spade, and it made a loud noise.
Son voisin a ouvert sa fenêtre de chambre. “Qui est là ?” a-t-il dit.
His neighbour opened his bedroom window. “Who’s there?” he said.
“Heu… juste un chat !” a dit Monsieur Thierry, dans un moment de confusion.
“Err… just a cat!” Mister Thomas said, in a moment of confusion.
La nuit suivante, il a essayé d’écouter à travers sa clôture, mais il n’a entendu que des discussions sur les roses et les marguerites.
The next night, he tried to listen through his fence, but he only heard discussions about roses and daisies.
“Des codes, sûrement,” pensait-il. “J’ai besoin de plus d’informations.”
“Code words, surely,” he thought. “I need more information.”
Alors, la nuit suivante, il a envoyé son aspirateur robot sous la clôture. Il avait fixé une petite caméra dessus.
So, the next night, he sent his robotic vacuum cleaner under the fence. He had attached a small camera on top.
Le matin suivant, il a allumé son ordinateur pour regarder la vidéo. Mais, la caméra était tombée de l’autre côté de la clôture. La vidéo montrait huit heures de la même rose.
The next morning, he turned on his computer to watch the video. But, the camera had fallen off on the other side of the fence. The video showed eight hours of the same rose.
Monsieur Thierry perdait espoir. Mais alors, tout a été révélé.
Mister Thomas was losing hope. But then it was all revealed.
Cet après-midi-là, il a vu arriver de nombreuses camionnettes. Beaucoup de gens sont sortis et ont couru dans la maison des voisins. Ensuite, les voisins sont sortis avec eux et ont attendu dans leur jardin.
That afternoon, he saw lots of vans arrive. Lots of people came out and ran into the neighbours’ house. Then, the neighbours came out with them again, and waited in their garden.
“Enfin, la vérité !” s’est exclamé Monsieur Thierry, en regardant attentivement.
“Finally, the truth!” Mister Thomas exclaimed, watching closely.
Les gens ont sorti une grande pancarte du camion, et l’ont placée devant la maison. Elle disait : “Bienvenue à l’émission de Jardinage”. Ils ont sorti de grosses caméras, et les ont allumées.
The people took a large sign out of the van, and put it in front of the house. It said: “Welcome to the Gardening Show”. They brought out big cameras, and turned them on.
Tout le monde a applaudi, et le couple a souri aux caméras.
Everyone clapped, and the couple smiled at the cameras.
“Ils se préparaient pour passer à la télévision !” a dit Monsieur Thierry à lui-même, en riant.
“They’ve been getting ready to appear on television!” Mister Thomas said to himself, laughing.
Quand l’émission est passée à la télévision, Monsieur Thierry l’a regardée.
When the show came on television, Mister Thomas watched it.
“Nous aimons jardiner le soir,” a dit son voisin, “quand il ne fait pas tellement chaud. Mais si nous avons besoin de parler, nous chuchotons toujours, pour ne pas réveiller notre voisin, Monsieur Thierry. Il est très étrange !”
“We like to do gardening in the evening,” said his neighbour, “when it isn’t so hot. But if we need to talk, we always whisper, so that we don’t wake up our neighbour, Mister Thomas. He is very strange!”
