Machines were self-replicating, capable of evolution, and humans navigated the stars as easily as the oceans.
In questo futuro straordinario, Carlo ha scoperto che la rivista scientifica, I Nostri Tempi, veniva ancora pubblicata. Si è diretto verso la loro sede digitale e ha chiesto di parlare con il caporedattore. Un’intelligenza artificiale, che si è presentata come Editor X-9, lo ha accolto.
In this remarkable future, Charlie discovered that the science journal, Our Times, was still being published. He navigated to their digital headquarters and asked to speak to the chief editor. An artificial intelligence, which introduced itself as Editor X-9, greeted him.
Carlo ha rivelato drammaticamente di essere un viaggiatore nel tempo. Ha chiesto se la rivista avrebbe ora preso in considerazione la pubblicazione del suo lavoro.
Charlie revealed dramatically that he was a time traveller. He asked if the journal would now consider publishing his work.
Editor X-9 ha fatto una pausa. “Viaggio nel tempo?” ha detto.
Editor X-9 paused. “Time travel?” it said.
“Precisamente,” ha detto Carlo. “Posso provarlo. Se mi permetterà di mostrarvi—”
“Precisely,” said Charlie. “I can prove it. If you will allow me to show you—”
“Oh, non è che non le credo,” ha detto Editor X-9. “Il viaggio nel tempo è stato scoperto centinaia di anni fa. È comune ora come andare in bicicletta era nel passato. Come pensa che abbiamo così tanti dinosauri in giro?”
“Oh, it’s not that I don’t believe you,” said Editor X-9. “Time travel was discovered hundreds of years ago. It’s as common now as riding a bicycle was in the past. How do you think we have so many dinosaurs around?”
Carlo è rimasto senza parole.
Charlie was speechless.
“Ho analizzato la sua macchina. È piuttosto rudimentale. Insegniamo un progetto simile a scuola primaria.”
“I’ve analysed your machine. It’s quite rudimentary. We teach a similar design in primary school.”
“Ma—”
“But—”
“Purtroppo, non possiamo ancora pubblicare il suo lavoro,” ha concluso l’editore. “Sembra, Carlo, che lei sia ora dietro i tempi.”
“Regrettably, we still cannot publish your work,” the editor concluded. “It seems, Charlie, you are now behind the times.”
