Arnoldo, un giardiniere appassionato ma goffo, era finalmente riuscito a far crescere una zucca gigante senza difetti. Era certo di vincere un grosso premio alla fiera locale, e non vedeva l’ora di mostrare il suo capolavoro.
Arnold, an impassioned but clumsy gardener, had finally succeeded in growing a flawless, giant pumpkin. He was sure to win a big prize at the local fair, and he couldn’t wait to show it off.
Tuttavia, alla vigilia della fiera, ha scoperto che la sua zucca era sparita. C’erano distinti segni arancioni che tracciavano un percorso dal cancello del suo giardino fino alla recinzione del suo vicino.
However, on the eve of the fair, he found that his pumpkin had disappeared. There were distinct orange smudges marking a trail from his garden gate to his neighbour’s fence.
Arnoldo ha affrontato il suo vicino. “Hai preso la mia zucca?” ha chiesto.
Arnold confronted his neighbour. “Did you take my pumpkin?” he asked.
“Non mi prenderei mai la briga di prendere un ortaggio così patetico,” ha risposto bruscamente il vicino.
“I wouldn’t bother taking such a pathetic vegetable,” his neighbour snapped.
“Era una zucca molto rispettabile,” ha insistito Arnoldo. “E qualcuno l’ha presa. Sospetto che abbiano pensato che l’unico modo per vincere fosse sabotare la mia candidatura.”
“It was a very respectable pumpkin,” Arnold insisted. “And someone has taken it. I suspect that they felt they would only be able to win if they sabotaged my entry.”
“È un’accusa scandalosa,” ha detto il vicino. “Sei sempre stato un giardiniere incapace. La tua zucca non avrebbe vinto un premio, nemmeno se assegnassero premi per gli ortaggi peggiori sulla terra.”
“That’s an outrageous accusation,” said the neighbour. “You have always been a useless gardener. Your pumpkin wouldn’t have won a prize, even if they awarded prizes for the worst vegetables on earth.”
Arnoldo è stato ferito e è tornato a casa infuriato.
Arnold was hurt and he stormed back into his house.
Il giorno seguente, Arnoldo ha partecipato alla fiera anche se non aveva niente da mostrare. È rimasto da solo dietro al suo tavolo vuoto, e sembrava ridicolo confrontato con tutti gli altri partecipanti, i cui tavoli erano stracolmi di prodotti. The following day, Arnold attended the fair even though he had nothing to show. He stood alone behind his empty table, and looked foolish compared to all the other entrants, whose tables were brimming with produce. His neighbour stood smiling, with his enormous aubergine on display.

Sure enough, the neighbour won first prize, and he approached Arnold to gloat. “I guess the best man won, eh Arnold?” he said with a smirk.
Improvvisamente, ci è stato un trambusto all’ingresso della tenda. La zucca di Arnoldo è rotolata dentro, come se avesse vita propria. Poi è arrivato il cane di Arnoldo. È stato lui a spingere e far rotolare la zucca per tutta la città. Il vero ladro è stato rivelato.
Suddenly, there was a commotion at the tent’s entrance. Arnold’s pumpkin rolled in, as if it had a life of its own. Then Arnold’s dog came after it. It had been pushing and rolling the pumpkin all around town. The true thief had been revealed.
I giudici sono rimasti sbalorditi. “Guardate le dimensioni di quella zucca!” hanno esclamato. Il vicino sembrava molto preoccupato.
The judges were flabbergasted. “Look at the size of that pumpkin!” they exclaimed. The neighbour looked very worried.
Il giudice senior si è avvicinato ad Arnoldo. “Visto che abbiamo già assegnato il primo premio, non possiamo toglierlo,” ha detto. “Ma se la tua zucca fosse arrivata in tempo, sicuramente avrebbe vinto.”
The senior judge approached Arnold. “As we have already awarded the first prize, we can’t take it away,” he said. “But if your pumpkin had arrived in time, it surely would have won.”
Il vicino sembrava soddisfatto, e ha agitato il suo trofeo verso Arnoldo.
The neighbour looked satisfied, and waved his trophy at Arnold.
“Tuttavia, alla luce di questi eventi, credo che dovremmo assegnare un premio speciale. Arnoldo, ti sarà dato il premio per il Metodo di Ingresso Più Insolito! Dubito che qualcuno te lo porterà via.”
“However, in light of these events, I feel we should award a special prize. Arnold, you shall be given the award for the Most Unusual Method of Entry! I doubt anyone will ever take it away from you.”
Negli anni a venire, il vicino di Arnoldo avrebbe regolarmente mostrato ai suoi amici il suo trofeo per il primo premio sulla sua mensola, e i suoi amici avrebbero sbadigliato. “Hai visto il premio che ha Arnoldo, però?” avrebbero detto. “È completamente unico. È entrato nella storia!”
In years to come, Arnold’s neighbour would regularly show his friends his first prize trophy on his shelf, and his friends would yawn. “Did you see the prize Arnold has, though?” they would say. “It’s completely unique. It went down in history!”
