Sig.na Topo era nella sua stanza, nella sua casa nella foresta. La sua casa era dentro un piccolo tronco a terra. Aveva quattro finestre, una porta d’ingresso e una porta sul retro, e un piccolo camino.
Miss Mouse was in her bedroom, in her house in the forest. Her house was inside a small log on the ground. It had four windows, a front door and a back door, and a little chimney.
Topo si stava guardando allo specchio. “Le mie orecchie sono così grandi,” ha detto tristemente. “Gli altri animali ridono di me.” Ha sospirato.
Mouse was looking in her mirror. “My ears are so big,” she said sadly. “The other animals laugh at me.” She sighed.
Fuori dal tronco, Sig. Volpe stava passando. Ha sentito quello che ha detto Topo. Si è avvicinata silenziosamente.
Outside the log, Mr Fox was passing by. He heard what Mouse said. He walked closer, quietly.
“Vorrei essere come Farfalla,” ha continuato Topo. “Tutti amano Farfalla. È così carina. Le sue ali sono così attraenti e colorate. E che orecchie piccole! La vita è facile per lei.”
“I wish I was like Butterfly,” Mouse continued. “Everyone loves Butterfly. She’s so pretty. Her wings are so attractive and colourful. And such small ears! Life is easy for her.”
“Scusami,” ha detto Volpe.
“Excuse me,” said Fox.
Topo è sobbalzato. Si è girato. Poteva vedere uno degli occhi di Volpe in ogni finestra.
Mouse jumped. She turned around. She could see one of Fox’s eyes in each window.
La voce di Volpe era calma e amichevole. “Mi dispiace per te. Anch’io sono molto brutto.” Volpe ha sospirato molto forte. “La vita è crudele. I topi possono usare il lago magico per diventare belli, ma le volpi no.”
Fox’s voice was calm and friendly. “I feel sorry for you. I am very ugly too.” The Fox sighed very loudly. “Life is cruel. Mice can use the magic lake to become beautiful, but foxes can’t.”
“Lago magico?” ha chiesto Topo. “Di cosa stai parlando?”
“Magic lake?” asked Mouse. “What are you talking about?”
“C’è un lago magico nella foresta. Quando i topi nuotano nel lago, si trasformano in farfalle. Non lo sapevi?”
“There is a magic lake in the forest. When mice swim in the lake, they turn into butterflies. Didn’t you know?”
“No!” ha detto Topo, con gli occhi spalancati.
“No!” said Mouse, with wide eyes.
“Beh, esci dal tuo tronco e ti ci porterò,” ha detto Volpe.
“Well, come out of your log, and I’ll take you there,” said Fox.
Topo ha riflettuto attentamente. Si è guardato di nuovo allo specchio. Ha visto le sue grandi orecchie.
Mouse thought carefully. She looked in the mirror again. She saw her big ears.
“Ma devo restare a casa,” ha detto Topo. “Quasi dimenticavo. I miei nipoti vengono a trovarmi dopo la scuola. Devo aspettarli.”
“But I have to stay at home,” Mouse said. “I almost forgot. My nieces and nephews are visiting me after school. I have to wait for them.”
Ora gli occhi di Volpe erano spalancati. “Non è affatto un problema,” ha detto. “Ti porterò io. Prima andiamo alla Scuola dei Topi. Poi andremo tutti insieme al lago magico.”
Now Fox’s eyes were wide. “That isn’t a problem at all,” he said. “I’ll carry you. We’ll go to the Mouse School first. Then we’ll all go to the magic lake together.”
Il cuoricino del Topo batteva veloce mentre si metteva le scarpe. Ha aperto la porta. Volpe stava aspettando pazientemente. Lentamente, Topo ha camminato verso di lei.
Mouse’s little heart beat quickly while she put on her shoes. She opened the door. Fox was waiting patiently. Slowly, Mouse walked towards him.
Quando Topo era davanti alla bocca di Volpe, lei ha detto, “Quanti nipoti? Quanto sono piccoli?”
When Mouse was in front of Fox’s mouth, he said, “How many nieces and nephews? How young?”
“Ho dodici nipoti maschi e otto nipoti femmine,” ha detto Topo. “Tutti stanno facendo gli esami finali. Sono molto carini.”
“I have twelve nieces and eight nephews,” said Mouse. “They’re all taking their final exams. They’re very cute.”
“Non vedo l’ora di conoscerli.”
“I can’t wait to meet them.”
Topo è salito sulla testa di Volpe.
Mouse climbed onto Fox’s head.
“Vai tra quei cespugli, segui il fiume, poi la scuola è nel campo,” ha detto Topo.
“Go between those bushes, follow the river, then the school is in the field,” said Mouse.
Volpe ha iniziato a correre. Topo poteva vedere la lingua di Volpe, che si leccava le labbra.
Fox began to run. Mouse could see Fox’s tongue, licking his lips.
“Ho solo bisogno di un po’ d’acqua,” ha detto Volpe. “Correre è faticoso.”
“I just need some water,” said Fox. “Running is hard work.”
“Mi dispiace,” ha detto Topo. “È proprio lì.”
“I’m sorry,” said Mouse. “It’s just over there.”
Potevano vedere il campo tra due grandi alberi. Volpe ha corso velocemente.
They could see the field between two large trees. Fox ran quickly.
C’è stato un forte rumore. Volpe ha urlato. Il suo piede era rimasto incastrato in una trappola.
There was a loud bang. Fox screamed. His foot was stuck in a trap.
Topo è saltato giù dalla testa di Volpe e ha iniziato a tornare a casa.
Mouse jumped off Fox’s head, and began to walk home.
“Pensavi che fossi stupida?” ha detto.
“Did you think I was stupid?” she said.
