Nicola si è trasferito in una grande, vecchia casa. Trecento anni fa, vi abitava un famoso pirata.
Nicholas moved into a big, old house. Three hundred years ago, a famous pirate lived there.
All’interno, molte cose erano rotte. “Ho molto lavoro da fare,” ha pensato Nicola.
Inside, many things were broken. “I’ve got a lot of work to do,” Nicholas thought.
Ha dipinto le pareti, ha riparato le scale e ha cambiato i tappeti. Fu allora che ha trovato la chiave d’oro. Era sotto il tappeto nel soggiorno. Sembrava molto vecchia.
He painted the walls, fixed the stairs and changed the carpets. That was when he found the gold key. It was underneath the carpet in the living room. It looked very old.
“Mamma mia, deve essere la chiave del tesoro del pirata!” ha pensato Nicola.
“Wow, it must be the key to the pirate’s treasure!” Nicholas thought.
Nicola ha cercato in tutta la casa. Ha guardato in cucina, nelle camere da letto e nel bagno. Ma non c’erano armadi nascosti o porte segrete. Ha cercato intorno alla casa, e persino sul tetto, ma non è riuscito a trovare un buco della chiave.
Nicholas searched all over the house. He looked in the kitchen, the bedrooms and the bathroom. But there were no hidden cupboards or secret doors. He searched around the outside of the house, and even on the roof, but he couldn’t find a keyhole.
Nicola non è riuscito a trovare il tesoro. Il pirata aveva vinto.
Nicholas couldn’t find the treasure. The pirate had won.
Poi Nicola ha avuto un’idea. Ha scritto una lettera alla persona che viveva nella casa prima di lui. Le ha chiesto se sapeva qualcosa riguardo al pirata, o alla chiave, o a una porta segreta. “Se mi aiuti, condividerò il tesoro con te,” ha scritto.
Then Nicholas had an idea. He wrote a letter to the person who lived in the house before him. He asked her if she knew anything about the pirate, or the key, or a secret door. “If you help me, I’ll share the treasure with you,” he wrote.
Una settimana dopo, una vecchia signora si è presentata alla sua porta.
A week later, an old woman came to his door.
“Prego, entri,” ha detto Nicola. Le ha offerto da bere e si sono seduti.
“Please come in,” Nicholas said. He offered her a drink and they sat down.
Poi la donna ha tirato fuori dal suo sacco un vecchio cofanetto di legno. Sembrava pesante e resistente. Lo ha messo sul tavolo. Aveva un grosso buco per la chiave.
Then the woman took an old wooden box from her bag. It looked heavy and strong. She put it on the table. It had a big keyhole.
Nicola si è alzato velocemente. Era molto eccitato mentre le dava la chiave. Lei ha infilato la chiave nel buco e l’ha girata. Poi ha aperto il cofanetto.
Nicholas stood up quickly. He was very excited as he gave her the key. She put the key in the keyhole and turned it. Then she opened the box.
Nicola ha cercato le monete d’oro. Ma non c’era nulla dentro, tranne una vecchia lettera. Si è seduto, deluso.
Nicholas looked for the gold coins. But there was nothing inside, except an old letter. He sat down, disappointed.
“Che perdita di tempo,” ha detto.
“What a waste of time,” he said.
“Non leggo questa lettera da cinquant’anni,” ha detto la donna. Le sue mani tremavano. Teneva la lettera vicino al cuore. Nicola ha visto che stava piangendo.
“I haven’t read this letter in fifty years,” said the woman. Her hands her shaking. She held the letter close to her heart. Nicholas saw that she was crying.
Nicola non sapeva chi aveva scritto la lettera. Ma poteva vedere che era davvero un tesoro. Ha pensato: “Spero che lo condividerà con me.”
Nicholas didn’t know who wrote the letter. But he could see that it really was a treasure. He thought, “I hope she will share it with me.”
