Le détective privé était assis à son bureau. Personne ne l’avait engagé depuis longtemps. Quand une femme est entrée dans le bureau, il a failli tomber de sa chaise.
The private detective sat at his desk. No one had hired him for a long time. When a woman entered the office, he almost fell off his chair.
“Excusez-moi, êtes-vous le détective ?” a-t-elle demandé.
“Excuse me, are you the detective?” she asked.
“C’est exact. Comment puis-je vous aider, madame ?”
“That’s correct. How can I assist you, madam?”
“Je veux que vous suiviez un individu suspect,” a-t-elle dit.
“I want you to follow a suspicious individual,” she said.
“Cela semble intéressant,” a dit le détective. “Racontez-moi en plus.”
“This sounds interesting,” said the detective. “Tell me more.”
Il était excité. C’était la grande affaire qu’il attendait.
He was excited. It was the big case he’d been waiting for.
“Il a un visage rond, un gros nez, et des petites oreilles. Il va toujours dans les jardins des autres et parfois dans leurs maisons.”
“He has a round face, a big nose, and small ears. He is always going into other people’s gardens and sometimes into their houses.”
“C’est terrible,” a dit le détective. “Quoi d’autre ?”
“That is terrible,” said the detective. “What else?”
“Il me regarde souvent, ou me suit partout. Je pense qu’il m’espionne.”
“He is often watching me, or following me around. I think he is spying on me.”
“Quels secrets cachez-vous ?” a demandé le détective.
“What secrets are you keeping?” the detective asked.
“Je ne vous le dirai pas !” la femme a dit avec colère.
“I’m not telling you that!” the woman said angrily.
“Ce que je veux dire, c’est : pourquoi est-ce que quelqu’un vous espionne ?” le détective a dit calmement.
“What I mean is: why is someone spying on you?” the detective said calmly.
“Vous êtes le détective. Vous devriez me le dire. Mais j’ai une idée.”
“You’re the detective. You should tell me. But I do have an idea.”
“Oui ?”
“Yes?”
“Il ne parle jamais, et il marche sur ses mains et ses pieds. C’est très étrange. Je pense qu’il pourrait être un extraterrestre.”
“He never speaks, and he walks on his hands and his feet. It’s very strange. I think he could be an alien.”
Le détective a réalisé que ce n’était pas la grande affaire qu’il attendait.
The detective realised this wasn’t the big case he’d been waiting for.
“Où puis-je trouver cet extraterrestre ?” a-t-il dit.
“Where can I find this alien?” he said.
“Dans ma maison,” a dit la femme. “C’est mon chat.”
“In my house,” said the woman. “He’s my cat.”
“Je vois,” a dit le détective. Il a ouvert la porte pour elle.
“I see,” the detective said. He opened the door for her.
Mais la femme avait écrit un chiffre sur un bout de papier. “Voilà ce que je vais vous payer pour l’enquête,” a-t-elle dit.
But the woman had written a number on a piece of paper. “This is how much I will pay you for the investigation,” she said.
Le détective a claqué la porte.
The detective slammed the door.
“Quand voulez-vous que je commence ?” a-t-il demandé.
“When would you like me to start?” he asked.
