“Prends soin du hamster,” dit la maîtresse de Élie. Elle part manger.
“Look after the hamster,” Elijah’s teacher says. She goes to eat.
Élie est assis dans la salle de classe. Il regarde le petit hamster. Il court dans sa roue, très vite. ‘C’est l’heure du déjeuner,’ pense-t-il. ‘Je dois le nourrir.’ Il lui donne de la nourriture et de l’eau. Le hamster mange et boit.
Elijah sits in the classroom. He watches the small hamster. It runs in its wheel, very fast. ‘It’s lunchtime,’ he thinks. ‘I must feed it.’ He gives it some food and water. The hamster eats and drinks.
Une petite fille entre. “Puis-je le tenir ?” demande-t-elle.
A little girl comes in. “Can I hold it?” she asks.
“Oui, mais fais attention,” dit-il.
“Yes, but be careful,” he says.
Élie prend le hamster et le donne à la fille. Il est chaud et doux, et la fille sourit. Mais le hamster mord son doigt. “Aïe !” dit-elle, et elle fait tomber le hamster.
Elijah picks up the hamster and gives it to the girl. It is warm and soft, and the girl smiles. But the hamster bites her finger. “Ouch!” she says, and she drops the hamster.
Le petit animal court par la porte ouverte. “Non !” crie Élie. Lui et la fille courent après. Élie ne peut voir que sa queue, quand il court dans l’herbe. Le hamster a disparu.
The small animal runs out the open door. “No!” Elijah shouts. He and the girl run after it. Elijah can only see its tail, when it runs into the grass. The hamster is gone.
Élie est très inquiet. ‘Je suis dans le pétrin,’ pense-t-il.
Elijah is very worried. ‘I’m in trouble,’ he thinks.
Il sort son téléphone et appelle sa maman.
He takes out his phone and calls his mum.
“Maman, tu m’aimes ?” demande-t-il.
“Mum, do you love me?” he asks.
“Bien sûr, Élie,” dit-elle.
“Of course, Elijah,” she says.
“Et tu m’aideras toujours ?” demande-t-il.
“And will you always help me?” he asks.
“Oui, Élie. Qu’est-ce qui ne va pas ?” demande-t-elle. Elle a l’air inquiète.
“Yes, Elijah. What’s wrong?” she asks. She sounds worried.
Il prend une grande respiration. “À quelle vitesse peux-tu acheter un hamster et l’apporter à l’école ?”
He takes a deep breath. “How quickly can you buy a hamster and bring it to school?”
